About Us

Welcome! You have landed on the website of Slidell Family Homeschoolers Inc! Please read on to find out a little bit about us.

Mission Statement

Slidell Family Homeschoolers Co-op exists to provide educational opportunities,
support, and social events for homeschooling families with school-age children by means of
weekly parent-taught classes during the fall and spring semesters, monthly field trips
throughout the year, and frequent social activities such as parties, park days, and moms’
nights out.

What is the Slidell Family Homeschoolers Co-op?

Slidell Family Homeschoolers Co-op (SFHC) offers homeschool families opportunities
to get together and enjoy social and educational interaction in an environment that is family oriented
and safe. Parents in the Co-op may choose to teach a class about something they
enjoy or are passionate about. Parents may also choose to just enroll their children in
classes and help out in other ways, such as being a substitute or outside monitor or helping
with set-up or clean-up. In choosing to join SFHC, families will also be agreeing to submit to a
set of guidelines that apply while at the Co-op or Co-op functions. These are not meant to
impose on anyone, rather to protect the values of the families that are making the sacrifice
to educate their children themselves for whatever reason it may be—religious or otherwise.

What is a Co-op?

What this really means is, what you get out of the Co-op, or any group, is what you put into it. If you participate regularly, provide input and feedback, and help in a variety of ways, you will get back in spades what you put in! This is NOT a drop-off homeschool group. This is an opportunity for homeschool families to stay and experience something together. We require members to volunteer in at least three positions to make our Thursday class days work. Volunteer positions include lead teaching, co-teaching, nursery workers, set-up, clean-up, hall monitors and lunch monitors. Each position is vital to making the day go smoothly for our children. Teachers are not paid for their time; the class fees they set go straight toward class supplies and activities and any leftover monies and supplies are given to the Co-op at the end of the semester; so teachers and co-teachers get one perk: early class registration for their children.

How did SFHC Get Started?
SFC began thanks to one woman's vision for a homeschool co-op for families with children of all ages. She made it happen and started us off with nine families, which grew to 30 families in only three semesters. Though she had to move across the country, the board maintains her legacy through this group of families who work together to provide fun extra-curricular classes and activities once a week; fellowship in the form of park days, moms' nights out, and field trips; and support for each other through this challenging season of life. With this growth come changes and adjustments, and we appreciate everyone who has participated in our Co-op in some form or another since its inception. We hope to continue to grow and watch our children flourish in a fun, friendly environment!

Who Is In Charge at SFHC?
In a good co-op, EVERY parent is in charge! So, that is why we encourage you to be involved in the activities, planning, and opportunities at SFHC! For general oversight, we have a Board of Directors who have various responsibilities. No one person is ultimately in charge, we all share and delegate responsibilities and we vote on major decisions. Feedback, input, and discussions are always welcome from ALL members so we can better serve the Co-op and community.

Legal Status
Our co-op is legally registered as Slidell Family Homeschoolers Inc. While we are not a legal non-profit, no one at SFHC profits financially from any position, be it board member, teacher, or volunteer. All monies collected are for the sole use of running the co-op, including payment of facilities, corporation and tax fees, co-op activities, etc. All financials are disclosed after the beginning of the new calendar year, after the tax return is complete and filed, for a limited time upon request. Class fees are collected by the SFHC and are dispersed to the teachers for the sole purpose of funding individual classes. Teachers are not employees and class fees are not to be construed as employment. SFHC has By-Laws written and voted into approval by the board.
